Local students will attend percussion camp at the University of Iowa June 16-21

Some 23 talented junior-high and high-school students are scheduled to attend the All-State Percussion Camp June 16-21 at the University of Iowa School of Music. Local students from (name of school) attending the camp are: (names, grades in school, and instruments).

Students attending the camp had the opportunity to select either the marching percussion, or drumline, track of the camp, or the world percussion track, which included steel band techniques, hand drumming, ethnic percussion, percussion ensemble literature.

All students attending the camp will participate in the final concert, at 7 p.m. Friday, June 21, in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The percussion camp coordinator was Dan Moore, who teaches percussion at the UI School of Music. The All-State Music Camp is sponsored by the UI School of Music and directed by Kevin Kastens, who also directs the UI Hawkeye Marching Band. Each camp offers a variety of musical experiences for talented young musicians who have completed grades 8-12. All participants were recommended by their school music teachers.

An internationally known percussionist, composer and teacher, Moore has experience from concert to marching percussion, and from jazz to classical styles. Performing all aspects of percussion, including keyboard percussion, drum set, ethnic and multi-percussion, he is considered a “total percussionist.”

Moore joined the UI music faculty in 1996. Only the second full-time professor of percussion at the UI, he succeeded Thomas L. Davis, who taught percussion at the UI for more than 35 years. He is a performing artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America, Sabian Ltd., and Innovative Percussion. He has written for Jazz Player, Sticks and Mallets and Percussive Notes magazines.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
