ARVIND REDDY AWARD: Recognizes superior contributions to the medical student
newspaper, "Vital Signs."
CARL GILLES AWARD: Given by the radiology faculty to a senior student who
has demonstrated outstanding capabilities in the field of radiology.
CAROL BOWMAN CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST WINNER: This contest stimulates student
writing and thoughtful reaction to the many new experiences that affect medical
DEAN'S ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Honors minority students who have demonstrated
exceptional leadership and scholastic achievement.
DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY AWARD: Recognizes the senior student whose performance
during the junior and senior clerkships in surgery has been deemed exceptional.
DISTINGUISHED STUDENT SERVICE AWARD: Given to members of the graduating class
who have made outstanding contributions to the college in areas such as medical
education, student activities, and student-faculty relations.
GOLD FOUNDATION HUMANISM HONOR SOCIETY: Developed to recognize graduating
students who are exceptional in their compassionate and respectful relationships
with patients, families, peers and staff.
HANCHER-FINKBINE CERTIFICATES: Given annually to a small number of students
who demonstrate outstanding leadership during their years at the University
HANCHER-FINKBINE MEDALLION: An annual University-wide award given to only
four students who have exhibited outstanding leadership, learning, and loyalty
to the University.
HANSJOERG KOLDER AWARD: Given by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual
Sciences to a senior student in the name of Dr. Kolder who pioneered research
in electrophysiology of the eye.
HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY AND THE GOLD FOUNDATION HUMANISM IN MEDICINE
AWARD: Given to a student who has been identified as exemplifying the highest
level of sensitivity, compassion and professionalism in patient care.
HENRY PRENTISS AWARD: Presented to a student whose performance in the freshman
course, "Gross Human Anatomy for Medical Students," is considered
INTERDISCIPLINARY HEALTH RESEARCH POSTER AWARD: Given for an outstanding
health-related research presentation.
JOHN AND ORAL SEBELIN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN INTERNAL MEDICINE: Presented
to two students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and show promise
in internal medicine.
LIECHTY AWARD IN FAMILY MEDICINE: presented to a senior student who demonstrates
outstanding enthusiasm and contributions to the field of family medicine.
MARGARET HUSTON AWARD: given for exceptional performance in clinical psychiatry
MARGARET ROUSE AKIN AWARD: presented to the student who shows promise for
a career in cancer research in the field of gynecology.
MARGARET V. LUNSFORD AWARD: presented to a senior who demonstrates achievement
and commitment to the field of anesthesiology.
MCCLINTOCK AWARD IN PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOPHYSICS: given in recognition of outstanding
achievement in physiology during the freshman year of medical school.
MEDICAL STUDENT RESEARCH POSTER AWARD: given during the College of Medicine
Research Week for the most outstanding poster presentation.
MICHAEL BONFIGLIO AWARD: given to a senior medical student for outstanding
research in orthopaedic surgery.
NATHANIEL ALCOCK AWARD: presented to a senior medical student who demonstrates
exceptional proficiency in urology during their clinical experiences.
NEW RESEARCHER AWARD: recognizes excellence in student research by students
who have done less than six months of research.
NORTH AMERICAN PRIMARY CARE RESEARCH GROUP: presented to a student who has
shown exceptional research in primary care.
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY AWARD: presented for exceptional
performance in the freshman biochemistry course.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN PEDIATRICS AWARD: given for excellence in the
OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARD IN OTOLARYNGOLOGY-HEAD AND NECK SURGERY: given to
the senior student who has demonstrated excellence in clinical and research
efforts in otolaryngology.
OXFORD CLERKSHIP AWARD: given to an outstanding third-year student who is
selected to spend two months of the senior year at the Radcliffe Infirmary,
RESEARCH DISTINCTIONTRACK: recognizes those students who are active in research
participation throughout medical school, including journal clubs, seminars,
and participation at national and local research conferences.
ROBERT J. ROBERTS AWARD: presented to the student who had the most outstanding
performance in the sophomore medical pharmacology course.
ROBERT J. JOYNT AWARD: given to the senior who is considered to be the best
student in the senior neurology electives.
SOPHOMORE MEDICAL STUDENT AWARD: presented by the Iowa Association of Pathologists
to a medical student who, as a sophomore, achieved the highest performance
in general and systemic pathology.
SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN PATHOLOGY: presented by the Iowa Association
of Pathologists to a senior medical student for meritorious participation
in pathology program.
STUART CULLEN AWARD: given to a senior who, by scholastic achievement and
clinical performance, demonstrates outstanding capabilities in the field of
THOMAS J. PARSONS AWARD: presented to a senior who, during completion of
the junior clerkship in internal medicine, exhibited compassion, sensitivity
and humanistic ideals.
W.R. INGRAM AWARD FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN MEDICAL NEUROSCIENCE: presented
