Women's Center co-sponsors workshop on media literacy for teens
The Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa
will co-sponsor a free workshop on media literacy designed for young women
ages 11-14. "Advertising and GirlsFrom Awareness to Action"
will be presented Wednesday, June 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Meeting Room A of
the Iowa City Public Library. Enrollment is limited to 30; pre-registration
is strongly encouraged.
The workshop will focus on advertising techniques used to market to girls
and women. Participants will have the opportunity to do some role-playing
and learn ways to deal with advertising pressure.
Presenter Mary O. Sullivan is an actor with the Riverside Theatre Shakespeare
Festival in Iowa City. Originally from Cedar Rapids, she currently lives in
Los Angeles and is pursuing a degree in Media Literacy Education.
Sullivan says, "An avalanche of advertising falls on all of us everyday,
most of it designed to make us feel bad. I want to let young women know what's
going on. Ads are not going to go away, so we need to learn how to manage
our media diet. Media Literacy is a growing field and schools all over the
country are beginning to include it in their curriculum. I'm excited to be
able to provide this media workshop during my stay in Iowa City."
The workshop is sponsored by The Iowa Women's Foundation, Women's Resource
and Action Center, The Emma Goldman Clinic, Domestic Violence Intervention
Program, Women in Science and Engineering, Rape Victim Advocacy Program, United
Action for Youth, and the Iowa City Public Library.
