UI Press, Russian professor win NEA grants

The University of Iowa Press and a Russian professor in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have won grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The UI Press was awarded an $8,000 creativity grant to support publication costs and related expenses for two winning selections from the Iowa Short Fiction Award competition. Titles will be selected by Barry Hannah, author of High Lonesome.

Russell Valentino, professor of Russian and director of the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies was awarded a $10,000 Literature Fellowship for his project translating Predrag Matvejevic's "Between Exile and Asylum: An Eastern Epistolary" from Serbo-Croatian. Through the author's personal journey into his family's past, this work of creative nonfiction explores the historical role of the Russian intelligentsia and the responsibilities of European public intellectuals. Valentino was one of only nine scholars to win awards for translation projects.
