UI Dancers In Company Touring Ensemble Presents 'Home' Concerts

Dancers in Company, the touring repertory ensemble of the University of Iowa dance department, will present their annual "home" concerts at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 28 - March 2, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.

Dancers in Company will also perform on the Target Family Concert series at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2 in an informal show and lecture/demonstration designed as a fun exploration of the world of dance.

The on-campus performances will launch a busy season of concerts and educational activities for Dancers in Company. The schedule includes performances and/or discussions in Iowa City, Council Bluffs, Waterloo, Oxford, Anamosa, Coralville, and Belvidere, Ill. Receipts from the home concerts help offset the cost of touring.

The 12-member ensemble, which is chosen by audition, provides UI dance students with practical experience similar to that encountered by professional touring dance companies. The student dancers are required to maintain a diverse repertory while coping with travel and performing in a variety of facilities. Co-directors of the company are faculty members Jeffery Bullock and Charlotte Adams.

The Dancers in Company repertory features a wide variety of dance styles, from ballet to modern dance to ethnic movement, including dances selected especially for educational events with young audiences.

The 2002 Dancers in Company repertory features New York choreographer Nicholas Lechter's "Bliss," combining modern dance and hip-hop styles, a fusion reflected in the music, which ranges from traditional R&B to hip-hop.

Adams has created a new set of Chopin waltzes for six women with "attitude."

David Berkey, chair of the dance department, has choreographed a new, athletic solo romp, set to the New Orleans-flavored "What a Little Moonlight Can Do."

Faculty member Basil Thompson, former artistic director of the Milwaukee Ballet, has contributed the ballet pas de deux "Bailero," set to the music of Joseph Canteloube.

Student choreographer Dawn Poirer has created a musical-chairs dance, 'Chances Are," a quintet of wild rolling, flying and jumping.

And the concert "closer" is faculty member Armando Duarte's "Boom Boom," which captures the exotic energy and color of carnival in his homeland of Brazil.

The 2001 company members are undergraduate dance majors Charlee Therese Champbell from West Des Moines; J.C. Cochran from Des Moines; Amanda Doll from Chicago; Dayna DeFilippis from Addison, Ill.; John S.W. Duncan from Spencer; Eulone Z. Gooding from Iowa City; Stefanie Killey from Roselle, Ill.; Victoria Lyman from Lake Forest, Ill.; Jennifer Otto from Auburn; Emily Price from Weatherford, Ok.; Kristin Scurlock from St. Charles, Ill.; and Jamie Spurgeon from River Falls, Wis.

Dancers in Company 2001 performances and educational events have been made possible through the support of Target, Land 'O Lakes Foundation, Alliant Energy, Principal Financial Group and UI Arts Share.

Tickets for the Dancers in Company evening concerts will be $10 ($5 for UI students). Audience members under 12 years of age will be admitted free.
