UI Engineering Student Wins Best Paper Award
Steven C. Mitchell
of Edgerton, Wis., an electrical and computer engineering graduate student
in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, recently won the Michael
B. Merickel Award for Best Student Paper of the Medical Imaging 2002 Symposium
San Diego, Calif.
The award is given annually to the student author
of an outstanding paper, as reviewed by symposium chairs. The winner is chosen
on the basis of originality, relevance to the field, and quality of research.
Mitchell's paper, titled "Segmentation of cardiac
MR volume data using 3D active appearance models," is co-authored by B. Lelieveldt,
J. Bosch, R. van der Geest and J. Reiber of Leiden University Medical Center
in the Netherlands, and M. Sonka of the UI department of electrical and computer
engineering. The paper resulted from a long-term research collaboration between
the University of Iowa and Leiden Medical Center that included Mitchell visiting
Leiden on three different occasions for a total of more than six months.
