UI Arts Share Program will present a steel band performance in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- As part of the Target Community Concert Series, the University of Iowa Arts Share program will present a performance of the UI Pan American Steel band at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 in Clapp Recital Hall. The concert is free to children and seniors, and a $1 donation is suggested for adults attending the performance.

Entitled "A World of Percussion," the performance takes a tour of percussion-based music and instruments from around the world -- Africa, Trinidad, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico and the United States.

The Pan American Steel Band is comprised of graduate artists and is led by Dan Moore, director of UI percussion studies. Since 1994 the UI steel band has grown to the point that the percussion department of the UI School of Music now maintains two complete steel bands. Moore and his ensemble have performed for hundreds of Iowa school children and communities through the UI Arts Share program.

The UI Arts Share program provides artistic resources from the Iowa Center for the Arts to schools and community organizations. The 2001 Arts Share roster includes more than 70 faculty and graduate students in music, theater, dance, the visual arts and creative writing.
