Release: Dec. 19, 2002

Media Advisory: UI Hospitals and Clinics and smallpox vaccination

The report published in the Dec. 18, 2002, issue of the Washington Post that lists University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics among health care centers that "are leaning against inoculating their staffs" against smallpox is erroneous. UI Hospitals and Clinics is working closely with the Iowa Department of Public Health to assist in the safe development of a pre-event vaccination plan. That tentative plan includes provisions for offering smallpox immunizations to select health care workers on a voluntary basis.
