“Live from Prairie Lights,” the series of free readings broadcast on University of Iowa public radio station WSUI, AM 910, will present readings by Nancy Zafris on Sept. 9 and Dan Scheese on Sept. 12. The readings, hosted by Julie Englander at 8 p.m. in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City, can be heard on the internet at .

Zafris, a Flannery O’Connor Award winner, will read from her new novel “The Metal Shredders” Kyle Withers wrote for, “An impressive and eccentric debut novel, Nancy Zafris' ‘The Metal Shredders’ analyzes the effects of money, relationships and family on the human psyche.”

The new book by Scheese, “The Mountains of Memory: A Fire Lookout's Life in the River of No Return Wilderness,” is published by the UI Press. Scott Slovic wrote in ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, “ ‘Mountains of Memory’ is a learned and engaging narrative, in the best tradition of Thoreau and Kerouac and Abbey, that offers not only useful information about fire lookouts and fine insights about literature and culture but moving autobiographical revelations from one of the country’s major scholars of environmental literature.”

Scheese is an associate professor of English and director of the Environmental Studies Program at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. He is the author of “Nature Writing: The Pastoral Impulse in America.”
