New international students arrive for orientation

WHAT: Orientation activities

WHEN: Aug. 14-23

WHERE: Various locations on- and off-campus, including the UI Iowa Memorial Union and The International Center.

This week the University of Iowa Office of International Students and Scholars, International Programs, welcomes an estimated 400 new international students to campus with a variety of orientation activities designed to help them start to feel at home in Iowa City. Activities range from immunization clinics and immigration sessions to an orientation fair, hoe-down and library and bus tours. Members of the media are invited to attend any activity on the schedule and to meet some of the new students arriving from all over the world. A few highlights of the orientation include:

Wednesday, Aug. 14

6-7:30 p.m. -- Banquet: An Iowa City Food Sampler, sponsored by Iowa State Bank & Trust Co. featuring a variety of cuisine from different local restaurants; location, Iowa State Bank & Trust, 102 S. Clinton St.

Thursday, Aug. 15

1 p.m. -- Official welcome from Diana Davies, interim director of the UI Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) location, Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU)

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. -- Helen Jameson, international student program coordinator, will discuss adjustment issues with the new international students.

2:30-4:30 p.m. -- Orientation fair, highlighting resources, departments and services on campus that may be helpful to new international students, including Information Technology Services, Hancher Auditorium, and Parking and Transportation; as well as many others; location, IMU Main Lounge

5 to 6 p.m. -- Picnic, International Center Courtyard, sponsored by International Programs

6-9 p.m. -- Hoe-down for both international students and members of the local community; location, International Center Main Lounge. (A great photo opportunity)

Friday, Aug. 16

11 a.m. to noon -- Information panel featuring off campus resources and businesses, Room 321 in the UI Chemistry Building

Saturday, Aug. 17

3 to 5 p.m. – Immigration Session at Room 225 in the UI Chemistry Building

Monday, Aug. 20

9-9:45 a.m. -- ITS Computer Center tour; location, Lindquist Center
10-11 a.m. -- Library tours; location, Main Library
