Candlelight vigil to focus attention upon eating disorders

The first nationwide candlelight vigil to recognize the challenges faced by people affected by eating disorders, to encourage healthy living and to help people "Accept Yourself…Accept Others" will be held at 6:30 p.m., April 20 on the Pedestrian Mall at the corner of Dubuque and Washington in downtown Iowa City.

The vigil will include a brief program with patients telling their stories of recovery, a reading of a pledge by Jennie Lillis, a UI student and member of the Iowa women's basketball team, lighting of candles and a brief moment of silence. The event will be one of dozens held on campuses across the nation, in addition to a vigil on The National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Co-sponsors of the national event include the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), the eating disorders program of UI Behavioral Health, Castlewood Treatment Center (St. Louis), Lindenoaks Hospital at Edward (Naperville, Ill.), The Renfrew Center (Philadelphia) and Delta Phi Epsilon national sorority.
