Fiction writer Biguenet to speak on translation April 18

John Biguenet, a fiction writer and translator from Louisiana, will speak on "The Sorrow and the Piety: Translation and the Education of a Writer" at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the University of Iowa English Philosophy Building's Gerber Lounge (Room 304).

Biguenet is editor-in-chief of the upcoming Encyclopedia of Translation and he has served two terms as president of the American Literary Translators Association. His books The Craft of Translation and Theories of Translation were published by The University of Chicago Press.

In a separate event at 8 p.m. Thursday, Biguenet will read from "The Torturer's Apprentice," a book of short stories, as part of the "Live from Prairie Lights" broadcast on WSUI-AM 910. Hosted by Julie Englander, "Live from Prairie Lights" is broadcast on WSUI, the UI's public radio station, from Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.

Biguenet's talk and reading are both free and open to the public.
