UI Center for Human Rights sponsors April 27 walk to benefit Afghanistan women

The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights has joined with other local groups to sponsor "We Walk So They Can Read," a two mile Iowa City spring walk at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in City Park to benefit Afghanistan women and girls.

Participants can register at City Park Shelter 7 starting at 1:30 p.m.

The group will walk in solidarity with the women of Afghanistan who were forbidden from walking in public under Taliban rule and who can now begin to walk freely in the streets. Walkers are asked to contribute a minimum of $5 each. Checks should be made payable to the national walk sponsor, UNIFEM/USA, the U.S. Committee for the United Nations Development Fund for Women. Proceeds from the walk will support UNIFEM's work in Afghanistan to highlight gender-equality and the active participation of women in the reconstructive efforts.

Local sponsors of "We Walk So They Can Read" are the UI Center for Human Rights, the United Nations Association of Iowa, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission, UI Global Health Studies Program, UI International Programs, Eagle Food Store, First Ave. Hy-Vee, Iowa Book L.L.C., John's Grocery, Inc., New Pioneer Co-op, and Prairie Lights Books.
