UI plans for new Athletic Learning Center

The University of Iowa next week will present the Board of Regents, State of Iowa with preliminary plans for a new Athletics Learning Center, to be located north of Melrose Avenue and just east of parking lot 14 on the UI campus. The regents will consider the plans during its April 17 meeting in Council Bluffs.

The 20,000 square-foot building will provide classrooms, offices, quiet study areas, conference areas and a library for the use of student athletes. Its construction will be funded entirely by private gifts.

The Athletics Learning Center, currently housed in the Quadrangle residence hall, provides student athletes with resources to assist them in reaching their academic goals, including study areas and tutoring. All new student athletes and selected returning athletes are required to attend the center for an assigned number of hours each week, according to attendance criteria developed by each sports team. Construction costs on the new building are expected to be around $4.5 million.

Pending Regents approval, construction will begin in August 2002 and be completed in August 2003.
