UI and ISU present April 5-6 Bioinformatics Workshop

The University of Iowa and Iowa State University will present a Joint Bioinformatics Workshop April 5-6, 2002, at the Molecular Biology Building on the Iowa State University Campus, Ames, Iowa. The workshop will include a survey of emerging bioinformatics activities in university research labs and Iowa industry.

The term "bioinformatics" refers to the application of high-speed information processing to a variety of biological research activities, according to Thomas Casavant, UI professor of electrical and computer engineering. Casavant, whose research includes helping scientists identify the genes involved in human diseases, directs the UI's Coordinated Laboratory for Computational Genomics and the ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering) Parallel Processing Laboratory. He is also a faculty member of the Ph.D. Program in Genetics.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting Casavant at 319-335-5953 or or by visiting the workshop web site at:

Workshop sponsors include: Iowa State University's Laurence H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics & Biological Statistics; the National Science Foundation IGERT Training Grant in Computational Molecular Biology; and the Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Graduate Program. Also, the University of Iowa College of Engineering and the UI College of Medicine-Computational Biology Initiative.
