President Coleman's statement regarding today's terrorist
attack on the United States
Members of the University Community:
We are all stunned at the violent attacks on the United
States this morning, and we share the grief that accompanies this horrible
tragedy. I believe that the most effective way for our University community
to respond is to continue our studies and work today, and not to be paralyzed
by the horrific events that have occurred. Classes will continue today, though
we are encouraging all faculty to make some time in their classes to discuss
the tragedies with their students.
Many people will want to talk about what has happened.
We have set up two rooms at the Iowa Memorial Union for students, faculty,
and staff to talk with each other and with trained counseling staff. The Lucas
Dodge Room in IMU will be open until 5:30 p.m. today, and the Northwestern
Room will be open until 6:30 p.m. for this community dialogue.
Also, I will be holding a regularly-scheduled Fireside
Chat this evening at 7:00 P.M. in MC's Café at the Mayflower Residence
Hall. I encourage all students who wish to discuss further what has happened
today to attend.
In solidarity with all people who have been affected by
these tragedies the flag on Old Capitol will fly at half staff.
Mary Sue Coleman, President
