UI's DeGowin Blood Center issues guidelines for donations

The DeGowin Blood Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has received numerous offers from people willing to donate blood following today's tragedies on the East Coast. At this time, donated blood suppliers on the East Coast are saying that they do yet know the extent of their donated blood needs because they do not yet have complete information about the number and nature of the injuries that have occurred. Consequently, they have not issued a nationwide call for blood donors at this time.

However, the need for blood donations may become urgent in the days and weeks to come. Accordingly, staff members at the DeGowin Blood Center are instructing people who are scheduled to give blood to keep those appointments. As the situation develops and the need for donated blood becomes more well known, the staff may request that volunteers who have expressed an interest in donating blood to do so in order to help meet that need. Staff members in the DeGowin Blood Center are collecting names and contact information of potential donors, and will contact those people to schedule a blood donation at the appropriate time. The need for donated blood is constant, and people are always encouraged to become blood donors.

For more information, please call the DeGowin Blood Center at (319) 356-2058.
