Make-A-Wish children to attend Iowa vs. Miami of Ohio game

About 25 Eastern Iowa children in the Make-A-Wish program will have the chance to enjoy an exciting UI football weekend on Saturday, Sept. 8, as part of the University of Iowa Alumni Association's (UIAA) Student Alumni Ambassadors' Game Day event at the Iowa vs. Miami of Ohio football game.

The day will begin at approximately 9 a.m. with a tailgate at the UI Recreation Building. The children and their families will have the chance to meet Herky, members of the cheerleading squad. After the game, members of the UI football team and coaching staff will visit with the Make-A-Wish children and sign autographs. They will also enjoy good food, listen to music by the Hawkeye Marching Band, and receive prizes and gifts compliments of area businesses.

The Gameday, now in its seventh year, is organized by the UIAA Student Alumni Ambassadors, who work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide children the chance to see an Iowa football game and to meet coaches and players.

"Make-A-Wish Game Day gives the children and their families a chance to forget about their medical conditions and enjoy a day of Hawkeye football. The children also remind us as volunteers to not take anything for granted and appreciate everything we have," Whitney Boulden, Student Alumni Ambassadors co-chairperson for the event.

Game Day has been recognized as a Program of the Year by the District V Association of Student Advancement Program (ASAP), which is a program for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) that seeks to promote the involvement of students in alumni relations, communications, and philanthropy.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to providing activities for terminally and severely ill children and their families.

Major sponsors of Gameday include: the UIAA, The UIAA Student Alumni Ambassadors, UI Athletics, Hy-Vee, Cookies by Design, Aero Rental, Carousel Motors, Old Capital Screen Printers, Wendy's, and Hargrave-McEleney. Other sponsors include: Advanced Auto Service, Anderson Erickson Dairy, Athlete's Foot, Big Ten Rentals, Carlos O'Kelly's, City Plaza Hotel, Coral Ridge Mall, Culligan Water Conditioning, Hawk Shop, IMU Food Service, JC Penney, Sweets-N-Treats, Quizno's Classic Subs, the Disney Store, Technigraphics, Wal-Mart, and Signs and Screen Printers of Iowa.
