UI, state lawyers organization: Young lawyers, practice in Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa College of Law and the Young Lawyers
Division of the Iowa State Bar Association will partner in sponsoring Iowa
Law Day, an event designed to encourage law students to practice in the state
after graduation. Iowa Law Day will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 at
the Radisson Hotel, 2525 North Dodge St., Iowa City.
The event features a keynote address by Iowa Supreme Court Justice Linda
K. Neuman, preceded by a panel discussion on the quality of life and the quality
of work issues facing Iowa lawyers, says Laurie L. Dawley, attorney, Shuttleworth
& Ingersoll Law Firm, Cedar Rapids.
The impetus for the event stems from a decline in the number of Iowa law
graduates who choose to remain and practice law in Iowa, says Dawley, who
is also a member of the Young Lawyers Division's Membership Committee, co-sponsors
of the event with the law school's Office of Career Services.
Jill DeYoung, associate director of Career Services, said statistics for
the class of 2000 show 67 students or 32 percent of graduates took jobs in
Iowa and 143 or 68 percent relocated out of the state.
Dawley and Career Services expects that the event, timed to coincide with
the on-campus interviewing process at the law school, will give Iowa lawyers
great opportunities to talk with law students about the benefits of practicing
in Iowa. Prior to the evening's kickoff of events, the Office of Career Services
will host an on-campus interviewing primer, from 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in
the Mirror Room of the Radisson Hotel.
Iowa Law Day is a modified version of Iowa Law Month sponsored by the Career
Services Office and held annually in February for the past 13 years. This
is the second successive year that the Young Lawyers Division and the UI College
of Law have joined to create Iowa Law Day.
