UI ‘Mom and Dad of the Year’ are honored

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Linda Eggleston and Larry Walz were honored as University of Iowa's Mom and Dad of the Year during the pre-game show of the Iowa-Indiana football game Oct. 20.

The 2001 Mom of the Year is Linda Eggleston of Cedar Rapids. Nominated by her daughter, Holly, a junior political science major at the UI, Eggleston is a public health nurse with the Linn County Health Department. Eggleston also works with troubled children at the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center and is active in her local church.

Larry Walz of Burlington is the 2001 Dad of the Year. Nominated by his daughter, Andrea, a sophomore psychology major at the UI, Walz works in technical support at General Electric in Burlington. He is active in his church, does volunteer photography at community events, and is a member of a model train club.

"My father raised me ever since I was a little girl to be a Hawkeye," Andrea said.

Both parents attended the football game and UI Alumni Association (UIAA) tailgate event as part of the UIAA's Family Weekend activities. Walz also attended a Johnson County I-Club breakfast.

Nominees for the Mom and Dad of the Year awards may be any parents of a UI student. Recipients are selected based on their community activities, volunteer work, personal achievements and honors, as well as an essay written by their son or daughter. Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board were the UI student groups who sponsor the yearly awards program.
