UI Hancher Auditorium institutes new security precautions

The University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium has expanded its security precautions in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the beginning of the current conflict.

Backpacks and large bags of any kind will no longer be allowed in Hancher. Ticketholders will be asked to return such items to their vehicles if possible. If absolutely necessary, backpacks and bags may be left at the coatchecks, but the bags will be opened and inspected in the ticketholders' presence before they are accepted for checking. Hancher reserves the right to inspect any bag or package brought into the facility.

Ticket stubs will be required in order to re-enter the building. Audience members who choose to leave the building at any time during a performance or its intermission must have their ticket stubs or they will not be allowed to return.

Access to the greenroom and backstage -- already controlled areas -- will be further restricted and more closely monitored.

Hancher has had a standing Emergency Preparedness committee since 1993, and Hancher personnel are routinely trained to assist in medical emergencies and orderly building evacuations. The new precautions were instituted in consultation with the UI department of public safety and based on research with other performing arts facilities.
