Prepare Our Sons for Life day is Oct. 23

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Modeled after the national program that encourages girls to maintain their self-confidence and optimism, the University of Iowa will recognize Tuesday, Oct. 23 as Prepare Our Sons for Life Day, a day of activities tailored for children ages 6-11 that emphasizes acceptance and celebration of one another. Parents or adult sponsors who are UI employees are encouraged to participate in the activities, which will also focus on the need for empathy, and boys' and girls' unique developmental needs.

If consistent with UI departmental policies, children are encouraged to shadow their adult parent or sponsor before the day's planned activities, which are from 12:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Below are children's and adult activities scheduled for Prepare Our Sons for Life Day:

12:15 p.m.-12:45 p.m. Second Floor Ballroom, IMU

Registration; pizza lunch; art project with child and parent; scavenger hunt with members of UI wrestling team; Welcome by Nancy Noyer, UI WorkLife; and presentation by Diane Finnerty, diversity resources coordinator, UI Office of Affirmative Action.

1:15 p.m. –3:15 p.m. Children's activity stations, snack, and instructional sessions: Caring for Self; Caring for Others. (All children's activities will be held in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.)

Instructional programming for adults:

1:10 p.m. –3:20 p.m. IMU Lucas-Dodge Room, (Room 256). Accepting the Uniqueness of Our Children-Parent Workshop

3:25 p.m.-4 p.m. Video; parent-child activity

4 p.m.-4:15 p.m. Program evaluation; door prizes

Organizers of the Prepare Our Sons for Life program are accepting personal item donations for distribution to the Domestic Violence Intervention Project and are planning the annual Prepare Our Daughters for Life program on March 2, 2002.
