UI Arts Share program opens 2001-02 on-campus events with school matinee
of 'O Pioneers!'
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Arts Share program, which shares
the academic arts resources of the University of Iowa with communities throughout
the region, will open its 2001-2002 schedule of on-campus events for schools
with a Tuesday, Oct. 16 matinee performance of "O Pioneers!", the
musical based on Willa Cather's beloved novel of prairie life in the late
The University Theatres production, with script by UI alumna Darrah Cloud
and music by Kim. D. Sherman, will be presented for secondary-school groups
at 10 a.m. in E.C. Mabie Theatre of the UI Theatre Building. An extensive
"O Pioneers!" study guide is available to participating schools.
Published in 1913 and based on Cather's childhood experiences in western
Nebraska, "O Pioneers" is a classic of American literature renowned
for its vivid portrayal of the challenges of life on the plains. The book
chronicles the struggles, sacrifices and triumphs of Alexandra Bergson, a
fiercely independent and determined Swedish immigrant who overcomes tremendous
hardships to build a life for her family on the desolate Nebraska prairie.
The Cloud/Sherman musical version of "O Pioneers!" has been an
enduring hit -- produced frequently throughout the country, by regional, college
and community theaters.
Tickets are $4 (teachers attending with school groups are admitted free).
