UI Alumni Association hosts Family Weekend Oct 19-21

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Alumni Association and Student Alumni Ambassadors will host Family Weekend 2001,"On the Road Again," Oct. 19-21 for family members of UI students.

More than 1,000 parents and family members will get a taste of student life during the weekend featuring the Iowa / Indiana football game on Saturday. Activities starting on Friday, Oct. 19 include classroom visits, lunch at the remodeled Hillcrest Residence Hall Market Place and campus bus tours in the afternoon.

Three information sessions and walking tours for prospective students will also be offered throughout the day on Friday; one session and tour will be offered Saturday morning.

On Saturday, a tailgate party will be held near Hawkeye Village (northwest of Kinnick Stadium) three hours prior to the Hawkeye football game against Indiana at Kinnick Stadium (kickoff time to be announced). Families can also attend the 10 a.m. Saturday Scholar presentation at 40 Schaeffer Hall, "The Civility Trap: America's Nostalgia for a More Civil Time" by Melissa Deem, UI assistant professor of women's studies and rhetoric.

A Casino Night and Auction will be held on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union. Family Weekend attendees may participate in a variety of games and an auction of Hawkeye memorabilia. At 9 p.m., students and their families can gather at the Union for outrageous games and activities with the Night Hawks presented by the Campus Activities Board.

Family Weekend will end with a farewell brunch at the Clarion Hotel in Coralville at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. UI Vice President of Research David Skorton and Assistant Vice President of Student Services Belinda Marner will be the featured speakers.
