UI's Evans receives Robert Ray Staff Scholarship
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa staff member Margaret J. Evans (formerly
Margaret Watson), a 1984 graduate of Muscatine High School, has been awarded
a $1,500 Robert F. Ray Staff Scholarship for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Evans, an assistant in the UI College of Education's Grant and Research
Services, was presented the scholarship during an August luncheon hosted by
Ray's widow, Iowa City radio personality Dottie Ray.
Evans is working on a bachelor's degree in business administration from
the UI's Tippie College of Business, with a major in management and organizations
and a minor in English. She expects to graduate in August 2002.
Evans has been on the College of Education staff for nearly two years. Prior
to that she was managing editor of the Journal of Prosthodontics at the UI
College of Dentistry for three and a half years.
The UI Division of Continuing Education awards the scholarship each year
to a UI staff member pursuing a degree at the university. It is intended to
cover the cost of tuition for up to three courses, two of which must be taken
through the Division of Continuing Education.
The scholarship was established in 1992 to honor the contributions and vision
of Robert F. Ray. Ray joined the UI in 1949 as a professor of political science
and served as the dean of the Division of Continuing Education from 1963 until
his death in 1982. A recognized leader in distance education, regional accreditation,
forensics and intercollegiate athletics, Ray believed in providing educational
access to people of all ages and incomes. He and his wife were instrumental
in founding the local Ronald McDonald House.
