Skorton named board president of human research protection association

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- David J. Skorton, M.D., vice president for research and interim vice president for external relations at the University of Iowa, was elected president of the board of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP) at its Oct. 29 meeting in Washington, D.C.

The AAHRPP is a national, nonprofit accrediting organization made up of representatives from the Association of American Medical Colleges, Association of American Universities, Consortium of Social Science Associations, Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, National Health Council, and Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research.

One of the board's first tasks is reviewing public comment on AAHRPP's "Interim Accreditation Standards and Procedures." A public review and comment period runs until Dec. 3. These public comments, along with input from pilot site visits, will be used in finalizing the standards.

AAHRPP will be conducting several pilot tests. The first test will be with the intramural program at the National Institutes of Health in December, and the organization plans to accept applications for full accreditation in early 2002.
