Skorton named board president of human research protection association
CITY, Iowa -- David J. Skorton, M.D., vice president for research and interim
vice president for external relations at the University of Iowa, was elected
president of the board of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research
Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP) at its Oct. 29 meeting in Washington, D.C.
The AAHRPP is a national, nonprofit accrediting organization made up of
representatives from the Association of American Medical Colleges, Association
of American Universities, Consortium of Social Science Associations, Federation
of American Societies for Experimental Biology, National Association of State
Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, National Health Council, and Public
Responsibility in Medicine and Research.
One of the board's first tasks is reviewing public comment on AAHRPP's "Interim
Accreditation Standards and Procedures." A public review and comment
period runs until Dec. 3. These public comments, along with input from pilot
site visits, will be used in finalizing the standards.
AAHRPP will be conducting several pilot tests. The first test will be with
the intramural program at the National Institutes of Health in December, and
the organization plans to accept applications for full accreditation in early
