UI power plant will clean its pipes with steam releases
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa power plant will conduct a series
of steam releases, beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15.
The releases, which are necessary to clean pipes that carry steam to turbines
that generate electrical power, will be carried out all day Thursday and possibly
into Friday, says Eric Foresman, UI construction engineer. Each release will
last from two to three minutes.
"The steam is released from the boiler through new piping leading to
the turbines. Even though it goes through a very large muffler to reduce sound,
the public probably will still notice the sound and may see puffs of steam
near the roof of the power plant," says Foresman. "We have to do
this to clean out any materials inside the piping, which is part of a recent
renovation of the power plant system."
