UI Alumni Association sponsors Winter Break job program

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Through its Winter Break Externship program, the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) is giving students a chance to get a look inside a potential career field by working with UI alumni in their places of business.

The externship program will be held twice during Winter Break, the first opportunity January 7-11 and second January 8-14, giving students one-on-one time with Iowa alumni sponsors in Iowa and across the country.

The deadline to apply for a Winter Externship is Nov. 9; applications are available at 24 Phillips Hall in the UI Career Center. There is no fee for participating in an externship; however, students are responsible for their own expenses including travel and lodging.

The UIAA Career Information Network is also seeking alumni employers to sponsor UI students in the externship program, which is also offered during spring break.

Students gain on-the-job experience in a variety of different occupations ranging from marketing to medicine. Some externship sponsors include the news director at KGAN in Cedar Rapids, a neurosurgeon from Chicago, Ill., the grant writing director for the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the head of information sciences at the Senate Library in Washington D.C.

Steve Gude, who graduated from the UI in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in speech and hearing science and with a master's degree in speech pathology in 1980, sponsored a UI student over winter break at the Des Moines Public Schools, where he is a speech and language pathologist.

"Students get to see what really goes on. You can read about your subject in a book, but when you spend time with someone in the field, it's a different experience than a classroom setting," he said. "They also have a chance to see if they are really interested in this field."

Externships are one of the many career services provided by the UIAA Career Information Network; it also provides the AlumNet career networking service for both UI alumni and students.
