Third Annual Mormon Trek Heritage Festival set for June 9
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Mormon Trek Heritage Society of Iowa City, a recognized
student organization at the University of Iowa, will sponsor the Third Annual
Mormon Trek Heritage Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 9 at the Hawkeye
Intramural Fields. Free and open to the public, the event will feature three
hours of live pioneer and bluegrass music performed by local talents Al and
Aleta Murphy, the Drollingers, The Nauvoo missionary "Pitt's Brass Band,"
and the Ocean Waves Square Dance Club.
The Hawkeye fields are adjacent to the University of Iowa's Mormon Handcart
Park, just off Mormon Trek Boulevard and Hawkeye Park Road. People wishing
to attend the festival should note that Mormon Trek Boulevard is closed between
Melrose Avenue and Hawkeye Park Road. The suggested detour route directs northbound
traffic west on Melrose Avenue, then north and east on Hawkeye Park Road to
rejoin with Mormon Trek. In the event of rain, the festival will be held at
Iowa City West High School on Melrose Avenue.
In addition to musical entertainment, an inexpensive barbecue dinner by
Smokin' Joe's Barbecue will be available. Also, free activities, including
pioneer games, and toys and crafts such as dolls and bonnets, will be featured.
Replica wooden handcarts will be provided for people to pull across a patch
of Iowa prairie at the Handcart Park, and historical data, such as the names
of pioneers and their descriptions of life on the trail will be shared. For
more information and a map to the Festival site, please see the Heritage Society's
web site at: www.uiowa.edu/~handcart.
