Peters, Baker, Hoffman join Tippie College of Business Board of Visitors
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Charles M. Peters, Dale E. Baker, and James E. Hoffman
are new members of the Board of Visitors at the University of Iowa Henry B.
Tippie College of Business.
The Board of Visitors is made up of more than 20 business and academic leaders
who provide advice to the college about its programs and professional activities.
It meets once each semester at the college.
Peters is president and chief operating officer of Gazette Communications,
which publishes the Gazette newspapers, Iowa Farmer Today, and several local
shoppers. Gazette Communications has a commercial printing division, web sites,
audiotex services and direct marketing services.
Peters is also responsible for KCRG-TV, KCRG radio, and Decisionmark, a provider
of services to the broadcasting industry.
Peters has spent a decade in the appliance industry, including a stint as
president of Amana Refrigeration and most recently as vice president of administration
at Maytag. He was also CEO of Breakthrough, Inc., a Coralville start-up software
and consulting company engaged in developing early literacy programs for school
systems. Prior to his experience at Amana, Peters practiced law as an associate
attorney with Simmons, Perrine, Albright and Ellwood in Cedar Rapids from
1980 to 1984.
Born and raised in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Peters received a bachelor of science
degree in psychology in 1974 and his law degree in 1980, both at the UI. He
was the 1989 recipient of a UI Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1989.
Baker is an ex-officio member on the Board of Visitors, representing the
UI Alumni Association board. He is president of Baker Healthcare Consulting,
Inc. an Indianapolis-based consulting firm serving more than 500 acute care
hospital clients in 35 states since 1990. Baker, a certified public accountant,
is also registered as a federal lobbyist, is a fellow in the Health Care Financial
Management Association and a member of the American Hospital Association.
Baker has 32 years of experience in the health care industry, including
being a partner with Ernst and Whinney and was the founder and managing director
of Olive Healthcare Consulting, a CPA and consulting firm based in Indianapolis.
He earned a bachelor of business administration degree from the UI.
Hoffman is president of Alliant Energy Resources and executive vice president
of Business Development at Alliant Energy (formerly IES Utilities). Hoffman
previously served on the Tippie College's Department of Marketing Advisory
Prior to joining IES in 1995 as executive vice president, Hoffman was chief
information officer of MCI Communications, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hoffman has considerable international business experience. While an executive
with MCI, he was responsible for establishing global alliances in information
technology with Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand, and he spearheaded a major
telecommunications alliance with British Telecom. Before coming to MCI in
1990, Hoffman was executive vice president of Telecom USA, Cedar Rapids.
