UI physicians earn awards for pediatric research

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two physicians in the department of pediatrics in the Children's Hospital of Iowa at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recently received awards for their research at the annual meeting of the nation's leading pediatric research organizations.

The Society for Pediatric Research honors students, resident physicians and fellows for outstanding research. Cary Murphy, M.D., a third-year resident physician in the Children's Hospital of Iowa, received a House Officer Research Award for his presentation "Survivin mRNA is Downregulated During Xenopus laevis Embryogenesis." Also, Lawrence "Lance" Prince, M.D., Ph.D., a fellow in neonatology, received a Fellow Basic Research Award for his work titled "Keratinocyte Growth Factor Stimulation of Human Airway Epithelia: Microarray Analysis of Gene Expression Uncovers a Role in Interferon Signaling."

In addition, two faculty members in the UI department of pediatrics -- Patricia A. Donohue, M.D., associate professor, and Val C. Sheffield, M.D., Ph.D., professor -- serve as council members for the Society of Pediatric Research.
