UI to host journalism workshops for high school students, July 22-27
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass
Communication will host its 49th annual summer journalism workshops for high
school students July 22-27.
The summer workshops offer a week of instruction in seven core workshops
in the areas of yearbook, newspaper/newsmagazine, desktop publishing, photography
I, photography II, broadcast, and web site design. In addition, students can
participate in one of a number of mini-sessions, to receive intensive instruction
in specialized skills, such as PhotoShop scanning and photo enhancement, sports
writing, typography, digital photography, editorial writing, website design,
and nameplate redesign.
More than 160 high school editors and staff members from Iowa and surrounding
states are expected to participate, giving students the opportunity to learn
from each other as well as experienced professionals. High school newspaper
and yearbook advisors from Iowa and several other states will be the instructors.
Rebecca Feldmann, a student at St. Joseph's Academy in Kirkwood, Mo. who
attended the summer 2000 workshop, said she gained valuable experience in
working with a team to create a publication. "This workshop challenges
students and leaves them feeling fully prepared to do their best on their
high school publications," she said.
"I really enjoyed this camp," said Tanya Meiners, a student at
IKM High School in Manilla, Iowa, after last summers workshop. "I
learned a lot of information that I can't wait to share with the rest of the
newspaper staff at school."
Fees vary slightly among the workshops and according to date of registration.
Registering before June 1 saves $20. For yearbook and newspaper workshops,
the fee is $355 before June 1 and $375 after June 1. For photography workshops,
the fee is $375 before June 1 and $395 after. For broadcast, desktop publishing,
and website design workshops, the fee is $365 before June 1 and $385 after.
The fees include tuition, room and board in a UI residential hall, and some
workshop supplies. Commuter students who will not live or eat on campus should
deduct $70 from these fees.
The registration deadline is June 25. Some scholarships are available to
summer workshop students. For more information, contact the UI Summer Journalism
