UI announces Mormon Trek detour from May 7 through Sept. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa is urging motorists to plan ahead during a May 7 through Sept.15 construction period that will necessitate the closing of Mormon Trek Boulevard between Melrose Avenue and Hawkeye Park Road. The suggested detour route will take traffic west on Melrose Avenue, then south and east on Hawkeye Park Road to rejoin with Mormon Trek.

The road closing, announced by the City of Iowa City, is being made in conjunction with the Mormon Trek Boulevard Improvements Project, Phase 1 from Melrose Avenue to the Iowa Interstate Railroad Bridge. Ron Knoche, spokesperson for the city, said that the project, being undertaken by Streb Construction Co., Inc. of Iowa City, includes the widening of Mormon Trek. He added that long traffic delays should be anticipated while improvements are being made to this major arterial road linking
