UI Press author receives 2000 Friends of American Writers Award

IOWA CITY-- Elizabeth Oness, whose "Articles of Faith" (University of Iowa Press) earned the UI Press' 2000 Iowa Short Fiction Award and was selected for the Barnes & Noble Discover New Writers program, has won second place in the Friends of American Writers annual competition. The competition recognizes emerging authors for their literary contributions and excellence.

Oness will receive her award at an April ceremony in Chicago from the Friends of American Writers.

"Articles of Faith" is about silence and the implications that arise when it is kept too long or suddenly broken. At these times, each character in this compelling collection turns to faith -- faith in religion, faith in love, faith in oneself -- in order to find solace.

Oness' first short-fiction collection, "Articles of Faith" is a collection of eight stories that has received praise from widely recognized writers and publications, including Publishers Weekly, which called Oness a "highly skilled writer whose stories are freighted with unique messages and perspective."

Copies of "Articles of Faith" (0-87745-726-3) $14.95 paperback, can be purchased through the UI Press at, by calling 1-800-621-2736 or at bookstores. For review copies or additional information, contact Megan J. Scott at
