UISG joins President Coleman at Iowa Congressional Luncheon

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Five University of Iowa Student Government (UISG) leaders will join UI President Mary Sue Coleman in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, March 27 for the Iowa Congressional Luncheon on Capitol Hill.

UISG President Andy Stoll and Vice President Chris Linn will be accompanied by Undergraduate Senate members Sara Stephenson and Megan Adams, and by Larissa Faulkner, graduate professional student senate executive.

The fivesome will spend the day speaking with congressional leaders on accessibility in higher education by way of expanded federal financial aid programs.

Yesterday (March 26) the UISG Student Assembly unanimously passed a resolution supporting four changes in the federal government's federal financial aid policy. The assembly supports a government increase in the undergraduate Pell Grant Award maximum amount, which for 2000-2001, stands at $3,125.

The assembly also hopes the government will eliminate a federal loan origination fee imposed on all student loans. The UISG believes the fee places an undo tax burden on persons who struggle to pay their college costs. Getting rid of the fee will help reduce the amount of money students must borrow, the UISG says.

UISG also supports a raising of the federal income tax deduction limits for educational loans, and ensuring all students have equal access to federal financial aid.
