UI initiates speakers bureau service statewide

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- From border to border, Iowans now have access to speakers on topics ranging from archeology and conflict management to women’s history by contacting the University of Iowa’s Speakers Bureau.

The UI Speakers Bureau links Iowa community groups, professional organizations, churches, clubs and schools with faculty and staff experts on a variety of subjects. The service debuts statewide this year, offering lectures, workshops and general interest discussions on topics representing virtually all areas of the university. "We want to offer Iowans a quick and easy way to find speakers for their groups, whether the topic is related to business development, African art history or water quality," says Jane Hoshi, an assistant director of University Communications & Outreach and coordinator of the speakers bureau.

Speakers are provided free of charge to Iowa groups of 15 or more people. Requests for speakers should be made three to four weeks in advance of the meeting date. Honorariums are accepted, but not required.

The Speakers Bureau makes it easier for groups to find a match with their areas of interest. "Group program chairs can call us, and we’ll take care of the leg work in matching a speaker with their topic choices," Hoshi says.

Organizations interested in hosting a speaker from the University of Iowa should contact Jane Hoshi at (319) 384-0017, or via e-mail at For more details, visit the Speakers Bureau web site at
