Old Gold Singers, high school groups to 'Swing Into Spring' March 31
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Old Gold
Singers will be joined by show choirs from two eastern Iowa high schools for
their annual "Swing Into Spring" concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, March
31 in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus.
The Old Gold Singers is directed by School of Music
graduate assistant Kevin Kriegel. Choreographers for the group are Michelle
Philgreen and Old Gold Singers alumnus Mark Mangold.
The school groups appearing with the Old Gold Singers
will be WD Forte from West Delaware High School, directed by Duane and Michelle
Philgreen; and a choir from Linn-Mar
High School, under the direction of Bob and Jill Anderson.
The Old Gold Singers will perform on each half of
the program. In between the Old Gold appearances, each of the high-school
groups will present their own set, or portion of the program.
The Old Gold Singers will open the performance with
a tribute to the South, in celebration of their Spring Break tour to Mississippi
and Louisiana. This will include spirited renditions of Jambalaya and Dixie,
as well as a few gospel tunes.
After intermission, the Old Gold Singers will perform
a tribute to Duke Ellington and several other prominent American composers.
This set will include "Birdland," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore,"
"It Don' t Mean a Thing if it Ain't got that Swing," "The Joint
is Jumpin" and others.
Finally, the Old Gold Singers will close with the
traditional "Swing Into Spring" performance of the UI Alma Mater
and a spirited rendition of "Jump, Jive, and Wail."
The Old Gold Singers is a select musical group whose
members are chosen by audition. In addition to "Swing Into Spring,"
their campus performances include the annual "Cocoa and Carols"
and "Fall Festival" concerts. The group also travels throughout
Iowa, performing for schools and community groups. Past tours outside the
state have taken them to New York, Washington, D.C., and the Bahamas.
A native of Brooklyn, Iowa, Kriegel has a degree in
music education from Central College in Pella and a masters in choral
conducting from the UI. He has taught public-school music in Iowa for four
years. Having been a singer/dancer for the 1989 Iowa State Fair Singers, Kriegel
has directed and choreographed show choirs and directed school and community
musical productions, including "Guys and Dolls," "Lil
Abner," "The Music Man," "Fiddler on the Roof" and
