UI photographers win photojournalism awards

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa professor has won a first place award from the National Press Photographers Association, and several UI students have won awards from the Iowa Press Photographers Association.

John Kimmich-Javier, a journalism professor in the UI College of Liberal Arts, won a first place award for a sports action photo in the magazine division of the NPPA Pictures of the Year Competition. Kimmich has won first place awards in this category in three of the last four years. This year’s winning photo shows a bullfight in Pamplona, Spain in July 2000.

The Pictures of the Year contest is a highly competitive and prestigious juried event usually receiving more than 29,000 entries each year from the best photojournalists in the country and internationally. Kimmich noted that few of the winners in this annual competition are university professors. Most are full-time professional photojournalists. More information is available online at

While he was pleased with his own award, Kimmich said he was even more gratified to see his students fare so well in the annual Iowa Press Photographers Association College Competition. UI senior Conrad Schmidt was named College Photographer of the Year, and UI students won awards in nearly every category, including six first-place awards.
