Jennifer Modestou to serve as interim director of UI Affirmative Action

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Jennifer Modestou will serve as interim director of the University of Iowa Affirmative Action office beginning July 1, when current director Susan Mask departs. A search for a new director is currently under way.

Modestou has a B.A. degree in political science from the University of California at Berkeley. She came to the UI in 1992 and has served as program associate with the UI Affirmative Action office since 1995.

The Office of Affirmative Action reports directly to the president of the UI and oversees all facets of the university's affirmative action program. It helps develop policy statements, helps set departmental hiring goals and creates the programs to attain them. It designs systems to report and measure the effectiveness of programs. It investigates and resolves complaints of discrimination and sexual harassment and leads educational workshops on a variety of workplace issues, such as affirmative action, valuing diversity, disability awareness, and sexual harassment prevention.
