Statement by Dr. David Skorton,
University of Iowa Vice President for Research
and Interim Vice President for University Relations

The University of Iowa is deeply sorry for the regrettable stuttering experiments on children at the Iowa Soldiers Orphans' Home 60 years ago that have been called to our attention in recent days by the San Jose Mercury News. While there were no effective safeguards in place in 1939 to prevent such experiments from occurring at universities, the University of Iowa today has in place a strict policy and procedures to insure the safety of all humans in research and has had these controls in place for some years. We are confident that experiments of this nature cannot happen again.
