Search for affirmative action director closed, will be re-opened in January

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The search for a new University of Iowa director of affirmative action has been closed and will be re-opened in January of 2002, UI President Mary Sue Coleman announced today.

"I have concluded, after discussion with Sue Buckley, chair of the search committee, that we have not yet found the right match between a candidate and our institution," Coleman said. "The director of affirmative action is an important leadership position within the university. We have been fortunate to enjoy wonderful leadership and a cohesive, effective office during Susan Mask's tenure as director. Her success puts a special burden on us in finding the next leader. We plan to
re-open the search in January 2002 with nationwide advertising. Using this strategy, we hope to identify a new leader by May or June of 2002."

Jennifer Modestou will continue as interim director of affirmative action. Former director Mask has moved to Seattle, Wash. Her husband, Joe Knight, former UI vice provost and long-time faculty member in the UI College of Law, has been named dean of the University of Washington Law School.
