Tippie College of Business offers information service via personal digital assistant

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Want the latest information about the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa? It's available in the palm of your hand via your personal digital assistant (PDA).

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and anyone interested in what's going on at the Tippie College can pick up their Palm Pilot, Handspring Visor, Compaq Ipaq, HP Jornada, or other popular PDA, log onto, and see college announcements, computer lab hours, the academic calendar and the day's events. Hungry? Users can even check out the menu at Pat's Diner in the Pappajohn Business Building.

The Stead Advanced Learning Technology Center at the Tippie College partnered with AvantGo, Inc., the leading provider of mobile infrastructure software and services, to provide the service. The AvantGo mobile Internet service provides free interactive and personalized content and applications to individuals with handheld devices and Internet-enabled phones based on the PalmOS and Windows CE/Pocket PC platforms. With the AvantGo service, users can access the web, wirelessly or via desktop synchronization, or select from more than 1,500 content channels, such as the Tippie College of Business site, which has been optimized for the small screens of mobile devices.

The Stead Center started offering the service after seeing the increased popularity of PDAs, particularly among students. Webmaster Rachel Stewart and student programmer Scott Stone of the Stead Center developed content for the site.

"More and more of our students are using PDAs to organize their schedules, check out the latest news and stock information and listen to MP3 audio files, so we wanted to give them a channel to see what was going in their own college," said Joan Huntley, director of the Stead Center.

She noted that the Tippie College is only one of a few colleges offering content and applications using the AvantGo service. Other colleges include Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Stead Center plans to add more content to the Tippie College AvantGo channel in the future, possibly some components of the Blackboard course management system.

To sign up for the AvantGo mobile internet service, users simply visit, then add the Tippie Channel ( to their list of channels using the "create channel" function.
