Dance Marathon organizers set $500,000 fund-raising goal

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- About 1,000 University of Iowa students have registered to participate in Dance Marathon, an annual event in which participants dance for 24 consecutive hours
to help raise money and create awareness for children fighting cancer. Dance Marathon begins at
7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU).

Karla Lee, Dance Marathon executive director and UI marketing senior, said she is hopeful the event will raise $500,000 for children fighting cancer and obtaining treatment at the pediatric and oncology unit at the Children's Hospital of Iowa, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The theme for this year's Dance Marathon is "A Day of Dance to Give Children a Chance."

Dance Marathon participants paid $25 in registration fees, and each is expected to raise at least $375 toward this year's total fund-raising goal. Although registration is closed, persons can still become involved by making donations or stopping by the IMU to support the dancers, Lee said.

The event last year raised $354,000 and more than $700,000 in the last six years.
