UI Alumni Association sponsors spring break job program

IOWA CITY – Through its spring break externship program, the University of Iowa Alumni Association is giving students a chance to get a look inside a potential career field by working with UI alumni in their places of business.

The externship program will be March 12-16, giving students one-on-one time with Iowa alumni sponsors in Iowa and across the country. Students gain on-the-job experience in a variety of different occupations ranging from marketing to medicine.

Some externship sponsors include a production manager at KGAN in Cedar Rapids, a neurosurgeon from Chicago, Ill. and the vice president of City, an Internet company in San Francisco.

Steve Gude, who graduated from the UI in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in speech and hearing science and with a master's degree in speech pathology in 1980, sponsored at UI student over winter break at the Des Moines Public Schools, where he is a speech and language pathologist.

"Students get to see what really goes on. You can read about your subject in a book, but when you spend time with someone in the field, it's a different experience than a classroom setting," he said. "They also have a chance to see if they are really interested in this field."

Externships are one of the many career services provided by the UI Alumni Association.

The deadline to apply for a spring externship is Feb. 25; applications are available at
305 Calvin Hall. There is no fee for participating in an externship; however, students are responsible for their own expenses including travel and lodging.
