UI Arts Share presents UI Pan-American Steel Band at Storm Lake High School Feb. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Pan-American Steel Band will perform for students at Storm Lake High School’s annual Diversity Day, Thursday, Feb. 15. The day will culminate in workshops offered by members of the Steel Band.

The performance and workshops will help students develop an understanding of the various instruments and sounds of exotic cultures from around the world.

The Steel Band performs on steel drums, which are actually 55-gallon oil barrels that have been carefully crafted into tuned musical instruments. Originating on the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, these tuned drums have a remarkable timbre that is immediately recognizable as a Caribbean sound. They characteristically play the infectious Calypso, Soca and Reggae music of the West Indies, as well as Afro-Cuban, American pop and other styles -- even including arrangements of classical music.

The Pan-American Steel Band performance and workshop is made possible by the Alliant Energy Arts Outreach Initiative of the UI Arts Share program. The Alliant Energy-Arts Share partnership is dedicated to connecting artists and performers with thousands of children and other audiences in Iowa community schools and organizations.
