That concert, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in Hancher Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

For its Feb. 18 concert, the Honor Band will perform "Festival Sinfonia" by Roland Barrett; "Chorale and Shaker Dance" by John Zdechelik; "Armenian Dances," Part I by Alfred Reed; an arrangement of Anton Bruckner’s choral piece "Christus factus est," and "Who’s Who in Navy Blue" by John Philip Sousa.

Wakefield is chair of conducting and associate director of bands at the University of Oklahoma School of Music, where he conducts the Wind Symphony and Symphony Band and coordinates the graduate wind conducting program. Since his appointment in 1985, the OU Wind Symphony has been acclaimed for its performances of standard and contemporary band literature, while performing for 12 national and regional professional music conventions. Under Wakefield, the OU Wind Symphony has cultivated new music through commissions, and has issued a compact disc recording of music spanning three centuries.

In 1996 Wakefield received the Phi Mu Alpha Orpheus Award for significant contributions to music in America. He has also been recognized for teaching excellence by the Blue Key Society of honor students. In 1997 he received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the OU College of Fine Arts and in 1998 he was nominated and inducted into the American Bandmasters Association.

Honor Band members are chosen by the staff of the UI Band Department on the basis of recommendations from their high school band directors, who are invited to nominate their best musicians.
