UI College of Law alumnus leaves $900,000 estate gift

IOWA CITY, Iowa—A 1928 University of Iowa College of Law graduate, Joseph F. Rosenfield of Des Moines, has left an estate gift of approximately $900,000 to the Iowa Law School Foundation. The bequest will be used to establish and endow the Joseph F. Rosenfield Collegiate Advancement Fund for the College of Law. The fund’s earnings will provide unrestricted support for programs and initiatives for the College of Law and will be allocated at the dean’s discretion.

“Joe Rosenfield was already a generous contributor at the time the Iowa Law School Foundation was founded 50 years ago, and he continued to offer support throughout the rest of his life. With this bequest, Joe has given the college the assurance of continued, flexible support that can be used over time wherever the need is greatest,” said N. William Hines, dean of the College of Law. “This is a wonderful legacy for future generations of Iowa law students and scholars.”

When Rosenfield died in June 2000, he left behind a legacy of community leadership and public service. The Des Moines native and 1925 Grinnell College alumnus was a prominent lawyer, business leader and philanthropist whose nonprofit work included membership on the boards of the Iowa Law School Foundation, Living History Farms of Des Moines, the United Way of Des Moines, Planned Parenthood, Grinnell College and other institutions.

Rosenfield’s career, which began with a 20-year law practice, spanned more than six decades. Among other interests, he served as chairman of Younkers Brothers Inc., a growing retail chain, and as executive of General Growth Properties in Des Moines. He also belonged to a small circle of nationally respected money managers—among them, his close friend Warren Buffett.

The Rosenfield gift is part of the Iowa Law School Endowment Campaign for the 21st Century as well as the UI’s planned comprehensive campaign to advance the university’s strategic goals for the years 2000-2005.

The UI Foundation, the university’s comprehensive fund-raising organization, is the preferred channel of support for contributions to all areas of the university, including the Iowa Law School Foundation. UI Foundation staff work with alumni and friends to generate funds for scholarships, professorships, facilities improvements, equipment purchases, research and other
UI initiatives. For more information about the UI Foundation, visit its web site at
