NEC AMERICA to help connect Children's Hospital of Iowa patients with loved ones

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Patients of the Children's Hospital of Iowa will have the opportunity to place telephone calls to their relatives anywhere in the world free of charge on Dec. 20, thanks to NEC America, Inc.

Patients and their families will gather in the East Room to make the phone calls between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. this Thursday. During that time period, there will be no limits on the number or length of calls that the patients may place to their relatives anywhere on the globe.

NEC America began this annual program in 2000 at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Utilizing NEC's Voice Over Internet Protocol technology, patients hospitalized over the Christmas holiday received the opportunity to make phone calls to relatives anywhere in the world. NEC engages in numerous charity events and says this program is an additional opportunity to connect people separated by circumstances at this special time of year.

The Children's Hospital of Iowa at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and its outreach clinics across the state serve critically ill and injured children. More than 100,000 children receive care at the Children's Hospital of Iowa each year.

NEC, recognized as a worldwide leader in high technology, is one of the few companies capable of offering a full spectrum of products and systems in telecommunications, computers and computer peripherals, imaging, electron devices, and semiconductors. NEC America, Inc., a subsidiary of NEC Corporation, develops and manufactures communications equipment and systems.
