Two new physicians to join UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine

UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine is pleased to announce the addition of Kefah Abbas, M.D., and Saleem Shamsee, M.D. to its health care team.

Abbas graduated from Damascus University School of Medicine in Damascus, Syria. After graduation, Abbas completed a residency in internal medicine at the Guthrie Clinic in Pennsylvania. He then came to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to finish a fellowship in rheumatology. Abbas is board-certified in internal medicine and is anticipating board-certification in rheumatology. He will begin practicing at UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine next spring.

"I am looking forward to working in the Belle Plaine community, and I am excited about the opportunity to meet the residents and learn about their health care needs," Abbas said. Abbas focuses on caring for adults and specializes in caring for seniors.

Shamsee graduated from Dow Medical College in Pakistan. He went on to complete a residency in transitional medicine at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston, Mass. Shamsee is currently a resident in the UI department of family medicine. He has experience caring for pediatric patients and also provides obstetrical care. Shamsee will join UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine in July.

"Belle Plaine is a great community with lots to offer, and I am eager to begin my practice there," Shamsee said.

Both Abbas and Shamsee will be able to admit patients that require hospitalization to the nearby Marengo Memorial Hospital and will also refer to other regional hospitals.

In the interim, UI Family Care Center continues to provide physician and nurse practitioner services and will also continue to accept new patients.
