UI students pair up to teach sixth graders about Kenya Dec. 18

IOWA CITY, Iowa – John Njue, a Kenya native who is a Ph.D. student in the College of Education, and Mike Post, a UI freshman who has volunteered in Kenya, will speak about Kenya to sixth graders at Kirkwood Elementary School in Coralville on Tuesday, Dec. 18 from 9-10 a.m. They will be in Susan Schamau's class at the school, which is at 401 9th Street in Coralville.

During their talk, Njue and Post will show video clips of a safari in Kenya and teach the students some simple phrases in Swahili, one of many languages spoken in this Eastern African country. Their presentation is part of the University of Iowa International Programs' new initiative, International Classroom Journey (ICJ), which seeks to globalize the K-12 curriculum in eastern Iowa.
